CHAPTER 14

On Saturday morning, Anna woke up before her alarm went off. Since she still had a few hours before she needed to be at work, she pulled some weeds from her garden, changed into her bathing suit and beach coverup, and headed to the cove for a morning swim.

The crowds hadn’t yet arrived, so she largely had the beach to herself, with the exception of a few fishermen and early morning walkers.

When she got tired of swimming, Anna dried off and stretched out on her oversized beach towel for the next hour, allowing the sunshine to warm her skin.

Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, Anna walked back to her cottage and showered off the salt water and sand. Then she had a leisurely breakfast in her living room and made her way to Bella’s Dream.

The foot traffic was nonstop from the time Anna opened her doors straight through until closing time. Anna spent most of the day providing backup for her employees behind the counter, in order to keep the lines moving along smoothly. When she wasn’t needed behind the counter, she greeted her guests and chatted up tourists.

The day flew by, and before Anna knew it, the evening shift was over. She took the trash to the dumpster while her employees cleaned the store. When she was heading back inside, she was startled to see Casper sitting on the stoop.

“Where did you come from?” she asked him with a chuckle.

He thumped his tail against the concrete and glared at her with his green eyes.

“Oh, I see. You’re mad at me, because I wasn’t here last night to feed you. I promise to remind my employees not to forget about you in the future.” She scratched the top of his head and since he didn’t pull away, Anna took that as a sign that she was forgiven. She filled his bowl with tuna and remained on the back stoop while he ate.

When she returned inside, Anna was surprised to see Ellen sitting at one of the bistro tables. Anna went over and took the seat across from her.

“I’m surprised to see you here. Wasn’t Luke’s funeral this morning?”

Ellen nodded. “Yes. Then the family went back to my house for a reception afterward. I came by because there’s something I need to tell you.”

“We’re just about to close. If you can hang on for a few minutes, we can have some privacy.”

As soon as the strawberry ice cream cone clock on the wall next to the counter struck 10:00, Anna flipped the sign on her door to read “closed,” her employees left, and she joined Ellen at the marble bistro table.

“What is so important that you came here on the night of Luke’s funeral?” Anna asked.

Ellen took a deep breath. “I have had quite the day. After everyone left my house, I was feeling restless. I wanted to be alone, but I also felt like I needed to keep busy to get my mind off of everything. So, I went over to Luke’s apartment to do some more cleaning.
